Beautiful scenes which is quite serene given all the noise and busyness of the works in hand.

We have been blessed, amazingly, with some fine weather this week; this helps enormously with the further consolidation of the secondary timbers to the Dance Studio roof in anticipation of its covering. Discussions continue on the cladding and selection of the installer. The frames for the walls to the Dance Studio are going in; there will be two windows along with a skylight. First fixes are being made for the electrics and comms required for the lighting and sound equipment to be installed. There will be a patch bay into which for eg a dance tutor can easily plug in their iPhone to play music. Boogie Babies will be able to use the Studio as there will be lighting and projection available, as now, but with the added bonus of underfloor heating. The timber frame for the Art Studio will arrive from 14 October.

VRï
Saturday 3 October at 7.30pm
‘a magical feeling of weightlessness and uplifting freedom’
VRï are three young men from deepest, darkest chapel-going Wales who have mined the cultural upheaval of past centuries and drawn inspiration from the incredible story of a time when Wales’ traditional music and dance was suppressed by Methodist chapels, and, earlier, its language by the Act of Union. As audio archaeologists, VRï have unearthed long-lost nuggets that shed a new light on a vibrant folk tradition that harnesses the raw energy of the fiddle with the finesse of the violin, the beauty of chamber music with the joy and hedonism of a pub session. Their songs, sung with powerful vocal harmonies, tell stories of the people who struggled 200 years ago, just as many struggle today. It’s a wonderful and unique soundscape that connects across the centuries to give us a sense of belonging, of community, and a magical feeling of weightlessness and uplifting freedom.
VRï are Jordan Price Williams (cello, voice), Aneirin Jones (violin, voice) and Patrick Rimes (viola, violin, voice).
‘full of the fervent energy of these three players, this is ingenious ‘chamber trad’, something brand new for wales.’ GEORGIA RUTH, RADIO CYMRU

Update for week ending 16 August 2024
Deluges in the “summer”. But on the bright side, no leaks in the Cloister or the Aisles – so the repairs have worked! Miles more cables being run, but the laying of the roof has been delayed due to the weather. The Builder’s Compound looks like a mini skyscraper city with the insulation ready to be placed. The flat roof, where the bee hives will go, has, as part of the install, a wildflower garden. Copied below a photo of other planting schemes with a selection of the flowers to choose from. Elsewhere, the external walls in engineering brick are coming on well, although it looks like a coal mine; the mortar is very thick and black. Unlike normal bricks, the laying of engineering bricks has to be staggered as only so many courses can be laid to allow for settling. Anyway, going to look very smart when completed.
Looking ahead, the first Dance Studio steel nodes are being delivered today for pre-fitting of the timber before coming to site in the first week in September. Alex Thomas of Timber Workshop in Devon is featured this week in the RIBA Journal. You can find an extensive article at https://www.ribaj.com/culture/profile-alex-thomas-timber-workshop-carpentry-making which makes mention of the Ucheldre project. Also attached here is a photo of one of the steel nodes being made by Cake Industries Ltd; these are pretty hefty and will be up to 1.5m diameter.
As ever much to do, but much to look forward to as well thanks to Holyhead – A Cultural and Heritage driven transformation funded by the UK Government with match funding from the Arts Council of Wales and the Community Facilities Programme.
