Update for week ending 16 August 2024
Deluges in the “summer”. But on the bright side, no leaks in the Cloister or the Aisles – so the repairs have worked! Miles more cables being run, but the laying of the roof has been delayed due to the weather. The Builder’s Compound looks like a mini skyscraper city with the insulation ready to be placed. The flat roof, where the bee hives will go, has, as part of the install, a wildflower garden. Copied below a photo of other planting schemes with a selection of the flowers to choose from. Elsewhere, the external walls in engineering brick are coming on well, although it looks like a coal mine; the mortar is very thick and black. Unlike normal bricks, the laying of engineering bricks has to be staggered as only so many courses can be laid to allow for settling. Anyway, going to look very smart when completed.
Looking ahead, the first Dance Studio steel nodes are being delivered today for pre-fitting of the timber before coming to site in the first week in September. Alex Thomas of Timber Workshop in Devon is featured this week in the RIBA Journal. You can find an extensive article at https://www.ribaj.com/culture/profile-alex-thomas-timber-workshop-carpentry-making which makes mention of the Ucheldre project. Also attached here is a photo of one of the steel nodes being made by Cake Industries Ltd; these are pretty hefty and will be up to 1.5m diameter.
As ever much to do, but much to look forward to as well thanks to Holyhead – A Cultural and Heritage driven transformation funded by the UK Government with match funding from the Arts Council of Wales and the Community Facilities Programme.
