The Ucheldre Centre was originally the chapel of the former convent of the sisters of the Bon Sauveur (‘Good Saviour’). During the 1990s, a programme of renovation and expansion took place, providing several functional spaces.
At the heart of the Centre is the Main Hall, the location of the former chapel.
The hall accommodates 150 people seated. The seating is not fixed, which means that alternative seating arrangements can be used, and some or all of the seats can be removed to create more space. For larger gigs the hall can accommodate up to 450 people standing.
Tables and chairs laid out for a formal meal allow up to 120 people to eat together.
The hall has been equipped with state-of-the-art sound, lighting, and cinema facilities
The side aisles provide extensive exhibition space, sometimes used in conjunction with the main exhibition space, and sometimes use for separate exhibitions.
A purpose-built gallery, with flexible lighting and high-level environmental and security features, allows the Centre to maintain a year-round programme of exhibitions in arts and crafts.
The Ucheldre Centre shop combines the functions of box-office, souvenir shop, and shop, as well as providing local and visiting artists with a point-of-sale for their work.
The striking architecture of the Ucheldre Kitchen makes a fine setting for lunches, teas, and private functions. The Kitchen is open from 10.00 to 16.30 Monday to Saturday, with lunches served 12.00 to 14.00, and for coffee, tea and cake 14.00 to 16.30 on Sundays. There’s a selection of hot and cold drinks with food baked on the premises. It also houses a selection of art for sale.
The courtyard is reached through the Ucheldre Kitchen. In the summer it catches the sun, while its walls form a natural windbreak and the paving makes it usable even when the ground is wet. A series of sculptures makes this an attractive space in a wide range of weathers, and a natural overspill area from the Ucheldre Kitchen.
Beside the Centre there is an amphitheatre which is used for outdoor performances and other events.
